It’s lovely to be able to use your sewing skills to make beautiful one of a kind gifts for your loved ones. If they turn out well at any rate…
Here’s one I’ve made recently. It’s the Vogue 8946 which I made for my mum for her birthday!
I opted for the long sleeve version in this lovely abstract rose printed jersey and lined with a mint green tricot jersey.
The pattern was pretty easy to follow. I pretty much threw away the instructions when I started making it so I have no idea how they compare but I don’t think there’s too many ways you can go wrong with this one! I opted not to add a zip (what’s the point? The jersey was more than stretchy enough) which made it even quicker to make.
It did come up really long though so I chopped off about 10 inches from the bottom – apparently the vogue ‘customer’ is crazy tall. Same goes for the sleeve. I ended up making it a 3/4 length sleeve because I know my mum likes those!
I love the pleated detail on the front on the dress. It’s really quite flattering.

It’s beautiful, mum must be so happy!
Thanks! She is (I think)!
That looks great. I tried making my dad a surprise shirt last Christmas… I’ve discovered the trouble with surprise shirts is they don’t fit! (Not when I make them!) … No surprises this year, I’m taking measurements & samples!
Great blog too π
Thank you! π
Oh dear! Yeah, surprises don’t always work out too well! If it’s a surprise outfit I’ll always try to make something that’ll stretch to reduce the risk of things not fitting! Unfortunately I don’t think you can get away with that with men’s shirts…
Haha, yes, I may be learning slowly, but I’m learning thoroughly! π
Such a lovely dress, so kind if you too, I’m not great at selfless sewing but I’m trying to do more
Beautiful fabric! Beautiful garment! It is so nice when you can sew up gifts for others!

Beautiful fabric!
What a cute dress! And that fabric is fab!!
Thanks! π
This looks gorgeous! Your mum is very lucky! I really like the little label you put in it too. I have this fabric too I’m sure, I got it in one of the shops in Walthamstow. I wish I’d kept mine for a dress or top, instead I tried to make leggings with it but it just didn’t have enough stretch. I’m hoping I can rescue the fabric for something else!
We must’ve gotten it from the same shop! Yeah it’s not the stretchiest of jerseys. Def try to rescue it!
