The Bobbi pinafore // Tilly & the Buttons

I didn’t think I needed another pinafore. I was wrong!

Bobbi is the latest release from Tilly and the Buttons and is a button from tree skirt/ pinafore pattern. The skirt has a classic A line shape with princess seams instead of darts on the back. The addition of a little bib piece and straps turns the pattern from a simple skirt to a pinafore! There are three different pockets that can be used – two options for the front skirt, optional patch pockets with a flap for the back and the bib.

I was gifted a copy of the pattern from Team Tilly (their official name, of course… πŸ˜‚) and couldn’t wait to try it out after seeing the cute tester versions!

FYI that’s my friend Megan AKA Pigeon Wishes gracing the pattern cover. She’s freakin’ awesome!!

I bought a baby pink jumbo cotton corduroy fabric specifically for this make from The New Craft House. (I don’t think this one is online yet but will update the link when it is!). The east London studio has just doubled their space to be able to stock even more designer deadstock fabrics. Worth checking out for unusual fabrics and prints!

Pattern adjustments:

+ I graded from a size 4 at the waist to a 5 at the hip. I fall right between these sizes since my butt has gotten bigger! I remember days when I used to make a size 3… πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

+ I shortened the skirt by 5cm. I noticed in the sample/ tester/ social media versions that I wasn’t super keen on the “mini” proportions. I knew that the length would just end up looking quite frumpy on me so I decided to just lop off 5cm from the get go instead. This meant I could use the proper lengthen/ shorten lines instead of just trimming the hem at the end when I realised I wasn’t happy with it!

Sewing up was as easy as I expected of any Tilly and the Buttons pattern! I loved that the bib was fully lined. It gave me a change to use a Rifle Paper Co scrap I’d been saving!

I opted to just do the hip pockets and a single bib pocket without the pocket flap. Whilst I liked the idea of the flap, I was a button short and I figured it would just as good without!

It’s such a fun little outfit. I’m so glad I went straight for shortening it as I like this length on me! I’ll be honest – I’m not 100% sure that this pink is my colour but I’m going to try to work it!

The only thing that bugs me about the pinafore is the little fold that happens in the bib just above the skirt. Probably a sign I’d need to alter it slightly if I made it again!

  1. Your version looks lovely!! May I suggest that if you do make another one, on your pattern or toile pinch out the excess fabric and reduce the bib by that amount. 😊
