DIY dressmaking + crafts with Emily

My top picks for an Xmas party dress!

It’s that time of the year again! I can’t believe it’s five weeks until Christmas! And with that come the requisite Christmas parties that we’ll be attending. Whether it’s work, family or with friends, there’s always an occasion to dress up for!

I’ve compiled a shortlist of my favourite patterns (and ideas for fabrics and styling to go with them) for you here. I think I’ll have just about enough time to sew one of them!

1. Go for a simple silhouette with Sew Over It’s Betty dress in a pop of colour! This brocade is sure to make you stand out (in a good way)!

2. Be a classy lady with this faux wrap dress from Burda. It’s a style that’ll be very flattering even with any extra winter weight! I’m desperate for a velvet version of view B myself! I’m thinking of gorgeous embroidery and beaded appliqués along a shoulder for that extra sparkle!

3. Got a black tie event to go to? Try the Elizabeth gown from Named. Go for a dark green satin as a sophisticated alternative to black. I’m totally channeling Keira Knightley in Atonement. (Man, I love that dress!)

4. Buck trends and choose the Lux jumpsuit from Ralph Pink. It oozes classy and cool. I’m dreaming of one with in black with a satin contrast trim neck and belt. Think tuxedo!

Are you making any festive-wear this year? What are your plans or have you already made your garment?

  1. I’m currently in the midst of sewing a holiday shirt for my husband. Once I complete his shirt, I’m making a dress for myself. I’m using a peplum top pattern the adding a circle skirt instead of the peplum. Hopefully it goes well!

  2. The burda pattern reminds me of that fab dress Chinelo Bally made in the swing bee a couple of years ago. It will look gorgeous! Now if only I had a party to go to…

  3. I love that Atonement gown too. Not as good as the one Keira wears for the Waltz in Anna Karenina, oh for the sewing skills and the ball to justify making something that beautiful!

I have a bit of burgundy stretch velvet that might become a skirt. With a black ribbon trim. Something sort of red riding hood like.
