Who else has made the Yona coat this month?
I’ve been looking forward to this month’s #sewmystyle project all year. I love the challenge of making coats but rarely get round to doing it so I knew this would be the perfect kick up the butt, so to speak, to get me going!
The Yona wrap coat from Named Clothing is a raglan sleeved, fully lined coat with patch pockets and a notched collar. It’s quite simple in design and construction. It’s a great beginners coat if you’re looking for something simple to sew as well as looking pretty stylish!
I made mine with a wool I picked up from the Stitch Fabrics warehouse a couple of months ago. It has a tiny woven polka dot pattern on the the front but the back also works with a criss cross pattern across it.
I liked the idea of using be contrast with the collar of the jacket to help it stand out!
I cut the pattern horizontally along the pocket placement lines to split the bodice into two parts that I could use to “colour block”. I planned to use the polka dot side for the bottom panel and the collar and the cross side for the upper bodice and sleeves. I placed the pockets just at this join so you can’t really see them at all.
I’ve not made the belt mostly because I don’t think I’d use it. I do have enough fabric leftover so if I can change my mind later I can always go back and make one!
I like the overall look of this jacket – it’s kind of slouchy and has a bit of grandad cardigan feel to it but I think that’s pretty cool! It’s a little wide for me at the shoulder and that’s something I would have to adjust if I made it again. Unfortunately I only tried it on after I’d already sewn in the lining and I just don’t have the patience to go back in to adjust it!
This is a really good pattern if you want to whip up a coat quickly. I love its simplicity of construction. It would be a great pattern for newbie sewists to make something really lovely without being too scary!
The last 3 patterns of the year long sewalong are currently on offer until Monday – use the code SEWMYSTYLE to get discounts on the Cali Faye Hampshire trouser, the By Hand London Anna Dress and any pattern of your choice from Named Clothing’s FW17 Earth Science Collection!

I love what you did with the colour blocking for this coat – I had a coat just like this one many years ago and honestly I think I completely wore it to rags! It’s just perfect for those fall days that are chilly but you just don’t want to put on a winter coat 🙂 I hopped over to Named and ended up ordering the Ansa Butterfly Sleeve Top – don’t know how this escaped my notice! I have been working more intensely on my style with the Curated Closet book, watching some youtube videos and creating files on Pinterest so this second (or 3rd or 4th!) look at the Ansa struck me that it’s bang on for the look I’m going for. So thank you for that nudge back to Named 🙂 I didn’t get the discount because it’s not part of the new Earth collection but that’s doesn’t matter now I can’t wait to get my hands on that pattern!
Love it! How often is it possible to make a garment that looks cozy and elegant at the same time?
Looks great, loved this !!
This is gorgeous! I love the contrast collar, it looks amazing.
Ah! Great minds think alike. I colour-blocked mine as well…now…just to actually blog about it. Yikes!
Nice! That fabric is perfect for this pattern!
