DIY dressmaking + crafts with Emily

A little crochet project!

I took a crochet basket making class at my local yarn shop a few weeks ago. It was a lot of fun, if a bit basic but it was a great place to develop some ideas!

One of which was making little crochet flowerpot covers!

Now I am probably the most un-green fingered person you will ever meet. I’ve killed every plant I’ve ever owned. I even managed to kill some succulents and cacti and they hardly require any work! So I gave it all up in exchange for some fake plants from Ikea! (Just because I kill them, doesn’t mean I don’t like green things! 😂).

I wanted to make sure the plants looked as jazzy as possible and figured fun pots would be a great way to inject some colour and life in there.

So I’ve made three little baskets/ pots with different colours!

I’ve used a tape yarn from here with a 7mm crochet hook. I used a slightly smaller than recommended hook to make sure it would create nice and tight crochet loops.

I love the colours I went with – a little bit scandi, a little bit hipster. And it goes with my orange themed living room! Though next time I’m tempted to make everything in pink!

Instead of the tape yarn you could try using hemp/ flax to get a more natural vibe or jersey yarn for something a bit squishier. You can also make these as big as you need them to be by continuing to expand the circle base before crocheting the sides!

Instructions:

Make a magic circle with 8dc stitches

Row 1: 1dc into first stitch, 2dc into second stitch. Repeat until end of row. Slip stitch . (12 st)

Row 2: 1dc into first stitch, 2dc into second stitch. Repeat until end of row. Slip stitch . (18 st)

Row 3: 1dc into first stitch, 1dc into second stitch, 2 dc into third stitch. Repeat until end of row. Slip stitch . (24 st)

Row 4: 1dc into first stitch, 1dc into second stitch, 1 dc into third stitch, 2 dc into fourth stitch. Repeat until end of row. Slip stitch . (30 st)

Row 5: 30dc into the back of the stitch (this will create a little ridge at the edge of the pot). Slip stitch.

Row 6: 30dc as normal

Repeat row 6 until you achieve the height you want!

You can make the pots narrower by stopping the increases after rows 4 or 5. Or even make them bigger by increasing further. To do that, I would recommend increasing in every 5th stitch, every 6th stitch etc for every row you increase.
