How I photograph my makes!

So I thought this would be an interesting topic to cover and to see how everyone else does it!

My aim when I shoot my makes is to have everything as clear as possible and for the clothes to look the best they can. I’m lucky that I live by myself so that I can turn my living room into a mini photo studio whenever I want!

My camera is a Fujifilm X100T which I got in March earlier this year. It’s a beautiful camera and an upgrade from the Fujifilm X100 I was using previously. The main reason for the upgrade was to have a camera with wifi which sounds ridiculous until you realise how I’m actually taking my photos…

So this is my set up at home:

As you can see it doesn’t take the biggest amount of space. Which is good because my flat is tiny!

Light is important for here as I don’t get a lot of natural light so I got a couple of cheap soft box lights off Amazon. They pack away completely so they don’t get in the way too much. They aren’t the sturdiest though but the price was just too good to resist! £32 for the 2 stands, umbrella/ soft boxes and 2 bulbs – bargain!

If you haven’t guessed already, I use the wifi camera remote app to actually take the photos. I don’t have anyone on hand to take them for me! It’s a pretty neat way to do it, the only downside being that you can see I’m holding my phone in most of my photos! It’s the ultimate selfie!!

So those are my photo taking secrets!

How do you take yours? Selfie in the mirror? Or do you get a loved one/ whoever is standing closest to you to take them for you?

  1. I take my photos by having my husband take them with my phone, because I somehow misplaced my camera in the move. He hates doing it and does a terrible job… so then I have to get a co-worker to retake them at work 🙁
…..I really need to save money, invest in another camera and get a tripod/remote 🙁 🙁

    1. Ah, I hated getting people to take my photos – I used to get my sisters to do it – as I’d never be happy with the outcome and everyone ends up angry… My tripod cost me around £15 – a great investment! 🙂

  2. I can’t believe you take your photos in such a small space! I use overhead and natural lighting. So I take my pics early in the morning if possible. I use a tripod and a remote on my cell phone too. There’s isn’t and hiding that huh? I’m trying a 2 second delay now though. Maybe I can avoid the phone in hand shots.

    1. There really isn’t. I try to hide my phone in my pockets (if I have them) but there’s really no way around that. I should just get a nicer cover for it and make it an accessory…

  3. Oh thanks for this! I was just wondering how you do it! They come out so nicely. I ask my husband but as with others, wven though hes a good photographer and we have a basic nickon slr he never gets it quite right and so we both end up frustrated… so I open put my phone on self timer mode, use the stairs as a tripod, and run back and forth trying to get some good shots! 😂 it is quite the site to behold…

    1. You’re welcome! 🙂

I had issues getting others to take photos – used to get one of my sisters to do it but they never took the photo quite how I wanted! You can imagine the arguments that ensued after that! Life def got easier when I got the remote!

  4. Emily, I love your setup, it’s perfect! I too use a tripod and purchased a lighting kit from Amazon (it’s amazing!) I have two cameras that I switch between…The one I use most is my newest and it is a Canon G7X. (My older camera is in Olympia with a zoom lens). My canon I use and purchased because it has an LCD screen so I can visually see myself. ( I don’t think the pictures are the best though!) Although my camera has Wi-Fi, I use the timer function rather than the optional phone remote. (No special reason, just used to it I guess). However, my biggest issue is getting a clear picture (user error, I need to learn how to use my cameras!).

I love your creativity! The clothing you make are so fun! I just found your blog (through Patternreview.com) and have been browsing through your archive. I’ve added you to my blog reading list on my blog so I (and others) can follow you easily!

    1. Awww! Thanks for reading and following! 🙂

I still get lots of terrible photos when I shoot my makes, I just take so many of them that there are sure to be some good ones I there too! I guess it’s all just practice, practice, practice!
